Tips & Tricks For your Tivo Remote From Tivo.com ® TiVo Speak Easy TiVo employee Michaela from the User Research Group insists the TiVo service is a great way to save time and stay literate! By taking advantage of closed captioning and the TiVo FORWARD button, she speeds through slow, dialogue-heavy parts of programs like the news, opening monologues of talk shows, etc., and still gets all the good stuff. How to do it? Activate closed captioning on your TV, and then press the FORWARD button once. (Bonus Tip: Many TVs activate captions automatically when you press the mute button.) You'll be able to read the dialogue and finish the program in nearly half the time! When you want to hear something real time, just hit instant replay. Ups & Downs Did you know that the CHAN UP/DOWN button on your TiVo remote is the equivalent to a Page Up/Down button? For example, use the CHAN UP/DOWN button while accessing your Now Playing screen to quickly jump to recordings near the bottom of your list. Or, if (as if!) you're watching live TV, use the Chan Up/Down button to scan the Program Guide more efficiently. Finally, while reviewing a program description of shows from your To Do List or list of TiVo Suggestions, use the Chan Up/Down button to jump to the program description of the next show in the list (instead of using the left arrow to go back to the main list and down, and over again, etc.). Clear Thinking Familiar with the CLEAR button on your trusty TiVo remote? Press it and you'll instantly remove all extraneous TiVo graphics from your TV screen--the Channel Banner, the Status Bar, etc.--so you can see the picture in full (handy when you desperately need sports scores!). Or use CLEAR to erase all characters entered thus far in a WishList search as a quick way to start over. Also, if you've typed in a channel number and decide you don't want to change the channel after all, press CLEAR and all's forgotten. Finally, using the CLEAR button is the quickest way to delete programs from your Now Playing screen. Simply highlight the program to be removed and... Hmmm, you're probably crystal CLEAR on this TiVo shortcut by now, huh? Best Pre-Awards Show Tip Craving conversation about dramatic theory more than gossip on who's arriving with whom? Select a Season PassTM for Bravo TV's original series "Inside the Actor's Studio" where Hollywood greats discuss their craft. Play Time Use these two clever TiVo shortcuts and have more fun with PLAY: 1) Press PLAY from any highlighted program title in Now Playing and you'll bypass the Program Information screen to jump straight to the show. 2) Anytime you're watching a program (live or recorded), press PLAY to display the Status Bar so you can see how much time has passed--or how much is left. Press PLAY again and the Status Bar will go status quo. How 'bout that? Movies, Anyone? Transform your living room in to a movie theater. Press the TiVo button followed by the number 4 to reach "Search by Name." Highlight "Movies." Pick a subcategory if you'd like, or continue on to the next screen. Enter the number 0 to see a complete list of all films scheduled for broadcast over the next two weeks. Use CHAN UP/DOWN and press SELECT for every show you want to record. And yes, buttered popcorn, please! Perfect Suggestions You can always take or leave TiVo Suggestions but here's a tip to guarantee you'll always get the good stuff. Press the TiVo button followed by the number 8 to jump to your running list of TiVo Suggestions. Use the RIGHT ARROW key on the first show to highlight the program details. Then, use the CHAN UP/DOWN button to access the program summary of the next listed show, and so on and so forth. That way, you can quickly cruise through each suggestion, scheduling recordings of the programs you absolutely want to take, and leaving the ones you don't. (Bonus Tip: Try the CHAN UP/DOWN button while accessing your To Do List and Now Playing menus also.) Extra padding safeguard No, not around your middle! "Pad" shows that traditionally run over scheduled times so you don't miss a minute. When scheduling a recording, select "Options." Highlight the line labeled "Stop Recording," and use the RIGHT ARROW to push the time out by 1, 2, 5 minutes (or even three hours if it's an awards show or football game). Toggle two channels Having a hard time deciding between two live shows? Enter each of the channels manually, and then use the ENTER key on your TiVo remote to quickly flip back and forth between the two programs. Kids can have a ball! Press the TiVo button followed by the number zero for a colorful surprise. Shhhh TiVo! TiVo sounds too loud? Turn them down, or even off, in the preferences section of Messages & Setup. Wild about wildcards! Ever wish your WishList picks could be more forgiving about certain words? A WishList keyword for "Osmond" won't find every show about the Osmonds. But if you put in a * at the end it will. Osmond* will catch a show about Donny, and the whole family! Or, YACHT* will catch shows about yachts or yachting. Pause for Quotations A WishList keyword will search for all the words you type, but if you want an exact phrase, use quotes. Use the PAUSE button to make a quotation mark (it even looks like one) for phases like "HOLY GRAIL" or "WORLD CUP." Wish for more! You know the WishList feature can find your favorite actors or directors, but did you know it can find your favorite sports teams, or your favorite foods? Try a keyword WishList like COWBOYS, CHOCOLATE, ITALY, or DAVE MATTHEWS. That elusive favorite movie Why does Joe vs. the Volcano only air in the middle of the night? When was the last time were home to catch The Great Santini? Create a title WishList with the keywords from the title of your favorite flick, and TiVo will take care of it.
